Applying for an opportunity with the BCER is easy and only takes a few steps.

Step 1: Submit Your Application

When applying for an opportunity, your resume and cover letter are the key factors in assessing your application. Please ensure your resume and cover letter clearly highlight how you meet the qualifications and requirements outlined in the job posting.

Step 2: Recruitment Process

Screening:

We compare the education and experience noted in your resume and cover letter, with the position requirements.
Please note: If you are not selected in the screening process, you will not receive further correspondence.

Assignment:

Some competitions include written assignments prior to/during the interview phase.

Interview:

If you have been invited for an interview for the position you have applied for, you will receive an email with a link to schedule your interview. During the interview, you will be informed of the next steps and when you can expect a decision.

Reference Checks:

You will be asked to provide us at least two references. Always check with your references beforehand so they are aware they may be contacted. References should come from a supervisor, mentor or team lead and should attest to your work.

Step 3: Offer

If you are the successful candidate, you will receive an offer of employment with the BC Energy Regulator. The offer will include an offer letter, Code of Conduct & Ethics Policy, Financial Interests & Assets Disclosure Policy and other supporting documentation. You will be asked to sign and return all the documentation within a specific timeframe.

How to Apply

Does the BCER have multiple offices throughout B.C.?

Yes, we have seven different office Locations within the province.


Does the BCER offer Hybrid Work Agreements?

Yes, the BCER operates under a Hybrid Office Model whereby employees work from both a home office and a designated BCER office location in order to support our mandate (eligibility may vary, depending on position).


Does the BCER offer Co-op Student or Summer Student Programs?

Yes, Co-op and Summer Student Program opportunities are re-evaluated every year and if approved, students studying in post-secondary institutions across B.C. are eligible to apply. These opportunities are posted directly on the respective post-secondary institutions websites when offered.


Do I need to be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident to apply for a position?

You must have a valid work permit to work for the BCER. Employment with the BCER is subject to the obligations and requirements set out in the Open Work Permit and is contingent on successfully obtaining permanent residency in Canada. Conditions must be met prior to the expiration of your Open Work Permit.


If I am currently working for the B.C. Government, do my benefits get transferred over?

Yes. Extended Health & Dental coverage is transferable; and service and seniority with the Public Service Pension Plan can be transferred by contacting the BC Public Service Pension Plan. As the BCER is not a Public Service Act Crown, seniority and vacation entitlement do not get transferred over.


Will my privacy be protected when I apply?

Yes. Your information will only be used for the purposes of recruitment and hiring.


Do I need to provide both a cover letter and resume to apply for an opportunity?

Yes. A cover letter is a great way to include details about yourself that your resume does not provide. It helps to set you apart and to compare your experience against others. It is useful to include both a cover letter and resume in your application.


Who should I address my application to?

Your cover letter should be addressed to the Hiring Manager.


If I am interested in multiple opportunities, do I have to apply for each position individually?

Yes. For each opportunity you are interested in, you must apply separately.


Can I apply for a position past the application deadline date?

No. You will not be able to apply after the application deadline, as that position will no longer be available online. We do not accept late applications.


Do you accept unsolicited applications or applications for positions that are not currently available on the Careers Website?

The applications are only accepted and assessed for the positions that are posted on our Careers Website.


What type of written assignment can I expect?

The format of the written assignment will depend on the opportunity you have applied for – you may be asked to answer a set of questions, review information and summarize findings, prepare a briefing note, etc.


What type of interview questions can I expect?

The format of the interview will depend on the opportunity you have applied for – you may be asked a combination of behavioral, situational, or role/organizational alignment questions. If the position is technical, there will be technical components asked in the interview.


What is an eligibility list?

An eligibility list is an inventory of pre-qualified candidates in ranked order who have been assessed in a staffing action and are qualified to fill future vacancies at the BCER.
