An order has been issued to Coastal GasLink requiring it to cease all construction activities in two specific areas in northwest B.C.

DATE ISSUED: May 17, 2023

EFFECTIVE DATE: Immediately

The British Columbia Energy Regulator (BCER) has issued an order to Coastal GasLink (CGL) requiring it to cease all construction activities in two specific areas in northwest B.C. It also requires submission of a plan to outline the activities and mitigation measures to be undertaken to address and prevent erosion and sediment control issues.

These steps were taken after CGL notified the BCER of a potential slope failure near Lamprey Creek, approximately 40 kms southwest of Houston, B.C. Additionally, the company informed the BCER of water turbidity concerns of a tributary of the Kitimat River roughly 35 kms southeast of Kitimat.

The order allows for continued work in the areas to address erosion and sediment control issues and prevent any further occurrences. The order remains in effect until amended or terminated by the BCER. The order can be found on the bc-er.ca website here.

The BCER is committed to ensuring activities are undertaken in a manner that protects the environment.
