We're now the BC Energy Regulator! Legislation has been brought in effect to officially change our name, modernize our board and expand our mandate.

DATE ISSUED: Feb. 22, 2023

EFFECTIVE DATE: Immediately

The Energy Statutes Amendment Act passed on Nov. 24, 2022, adding hydrogen, ammonia, methanol and expanded powers on Carbon Capture & Sequestration (CCS) to our existing mandate on oil, gas and geothermal activities, modernizing our board structure and changing our name to the BC Energy Regulator (BCER).

The provisions making the name change and updating the Board structure were brought into effect and announced by the provincial government on Feb. 17, 2023. Further provisions are expected to be brought into effect later this year.

Additionally, the Province also made appointments to the new Board, expanding from three to seven members, with at least one of those directors being an Indigenous person, and designating the chair of the Board.

We’d like to thank our board consultants, Steve Kinsey, Margie Parikh and Cheryl Tobias, for their dedicated commitment and service. At the same time, we welcome the continuing (Shannon Baskerville, Patrick Kelly) and new board members (Chris Hayman (Chair), Natascha Kiernan, Ken Cameron, Sharon Singh, and Kevin Brewster), and look forward to working with them to deliver on the BCER’s purpose, mandate and strategic framework.

Our public website, social media accounts and other public-facing materials are being updated to reflect these changes.
